An Interview with Voyage Denver Mag

An Interview with Voyage Denver Mag

Hi Madi, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I come from a family of musicians and artists. Two of my grandparents were accomplished painters, and my mother, an author and commercial artist, instilled in me a love for a wide variety of mediums and styles. Creativity has always been a value in our family. When I was little, I started painting but didn’t discover that I really wanted to pursue it fully until I began traveling. Seeing how cultures use such powerful expression through painting and art to express their passions made me realize that art is a global language to express love and joy to people. The realization that my paintbrushes could bring warmth and peace into a home intrigued me. It didn’t seem possible for me to make this a career, but I just decided to do everything I could to make it work. I was determined to disprove the typical phrase, “starving artist.” I trained professionally with Australian, Israeli, and American artists as I lived and traveled through different settings. As I went, my own style began to take shape, and my “voice” began to be clear in my pieces and my commissions.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road. I’ve cried and wanted to scream in frustration more than once on this journey. It’s discouraging sometimes being an artist because everything says it won’t work, that you can’t make enough money. I think any time you go against the grain of the typical career trajectory, it’s a challenge. One thing for me that was tough was having to restart in some ways after moving. There was a stretch in there where I made a major relocation every six months or so for a few years. It seemed like just as I would gain some traction and have some consistency in my business, I’d move and have to go back to square one. Having a spouse that is supportive has been a huge blessing that’s making this easier, but we have made sacrifices and lived frugally while getting my business off the ground.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about you’re your work?
I’m a watercolor artist & designer. I specialize in custom painting commissions, as well as original products. I’m most known for my landscape pieces using my “ambient weave” technique inspired by the bark of the rainbow eucalyptus trees. I’m really proud of how unique and intimate my work is. Each painting I do is unique, and I love the process of working with a client to turn their ideas and feelings into a piece of visual expression. What sets me apart from others is perhaps my motivation. A lot of art currently seems to be motivated by how striking or startling or bold it can be. I’m not trying to make a big statement or get massive recognition. I’m trying to create art that will fill homes with peace and will be uplifting to families. I think my work can bring a smile into a tough day and can make a home that much more cozy and comfortable for the people living their lives in it. I’m motivated by a desire to bring calm into space.

We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I’ve probably contemplated giving up numerous times. I think that I can give the impression outwardly that I’ve confidently got it all together when honestly, it can be a real challenge to stay hopeful and continue pursuing art as a vocation. Another and equally shocking surprise might be that I wouldn’t say I like ice cream.
